Former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has leveled serious allegations against the recently reinstated Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.
Sani accused Sanusi of supporting and encouraging tyranny during his tenure as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in Kaduna State.
The allegations come amidst the ongoing tussle surrounding Sanusi’s reinstatement as the Emir of Kano, a position from which he was deposed in 2020 by the Kano State Government as reported by Daily Post.
The reinstatement has sparked controversy, with the Kano State Government vowing not to be intimidated by the decision.
The conflict between Sanusi and the Kano State Government dates back to his time as the CBN Governor.
During this period, Sanusi was known for his outspoken nature and criticism of the government’s policies.
His stance on various issues often put him at odds with the authorities, leading to tensions.
In 2020, the Kano State Government deposed Sanusi from his position as the Emir of Kano, citing insubordination and disrespect for the traditional institution.
The move was met with widespread criticism from various quarters, with many accusing the government of overstepping its bounds and undermining the traditional institution.
In his recent statement, Shehu Sani, a former senator and vocal critic of the Kano State Government, accused Sanusi of supporting and encouraging tyranny during his time as the CBN Governor in Kaduna State.
Sani alleged that Sanusi’s actions and statements during that period emboldened the then-governor of Kaduna State, who was known for his authoritarian tendencies.
According to Sani, Sanusi’s support for the governor’s policies and actions contributed to the erosion of democratic principles and the suppression of dissenting voices in the state.
Sani further claimed that Sanusi’s reinstatement as the Emir of Kano was a result of political machinations and not based on the principles of justice and fairness.
He called on the authorities to investigate Sanusi’s alleged involvement in supporting tyranny and hold him accountable for his actions.
The allegations made by Shehu Sani have sparked a heated debate within the political and traditional circles of Nigeria.
While some have dismissed the claims as baseless and politically motivated, others have called for a thorough investigation into Sanusi’s conduct during his tenure as the CBN Governor.
The Kano State Government has maintained its stance, vowing not to be intimidated by Sanusi’s reinstatement.
In a statement, the State Deputy Governor, Aminu Gwarzo, reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the traditional institution.
Meanwhile, the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, has been hosting district heads at the Nassarawa Palace, a move seen by some as an attempt to assert his authority and challenge Sanusi’s reinstatement.
The tussle over the Kano Emirate has far-reaching implications for the traditional institution in Nigeria and the delicate balance of power between the government and traditional authorities.
It also raises questions about the role of outspoken public figures and their influence on governance and democratic principles.
